Tropical Storm/Hurricane Preparation Checklist
Prioritize anchoring the frame, securing every opening, and removing anything that could blow into the greenhouse. Finish preparations before winds pick up.
- Close and latch doors, roof vents, and louvers. Secure automatic vent openers according to the manufacturer’s instructions so they cannot open during the storm. Don’t leave a door open to “equalize pressure.”
- Check the anchors and frame. Tighten loose bolts and inspect the connections between the frame, base, and ground. Use manufacturer-approved anchors and bracing; heavy pots inside do not anchor the structure.
- Check the covering. Secure loose glazing clips, panel retainers, and plastic-film fasteners. Repair damaged sections while conditions are calm. For film-covered structures facing extreme winds, removing the cover beforehand may protect the frame—but follow guidance for your particular greenhouse.
- Clear nearby loose items. Bring in tools, pots, furniture, hanging baskets, and unsecured shade cloth. Flying debris can break greenhouse glazing.
- Protect plants and drainage. Move valuable plants to a sturdy building if possible, lower tall plants off benches, and clear gutters and drainage paths.
- For a small portable plastic greenhouse: if strong gusts are forecast and it lacks dependable anchoring, dismantle and store it while conditions are calm.
During the storm, stay out of the greenhouse and don’t attempt repairs or hold down a loose cover. Inspect afterward for unstable framing, broken glass, and wet electrical equipment.
