Winter Storm Preparation Checklist

Winter Storm Preparation Checklist for Your Greenhouse

Protect your greenhouse and plants during severe winter weather with this comprehensive checklist. Taking these steps before a storm arrives can prevent damage and ensure your growing season continues smoothly.

Power & Backup Systems (Critical Priority)

  • Portable Generator: Have a generator prepared and ready to power controls, blowers, and heating systems in the event of a power failure
  • Generator Fuel: Ensure adequate fuel supply is on hand and stored safely
  • Extension Cords: Have proper gauge cords ready for generator connections
  • Alternative Heating: In lieu of a generator, portable propane heaters could be a viable alternative, but air circulation would be an issue

Days Before the Storm (Check Supplies & Systems)

  • Propane Tanks: Fill all propane tanks well in advance
  • Generator Fuel: Stock up on gasoline or diesel for portable generators
  • Heating Controls: Inspect and test all controls for heating systems
  • Fan Systems: Inspect and test all fan controls and verify blowers are functional
  • Vents & Curtains: Inspect all vents, curtains, and openings prior to a storm
  • Doors & Shutters: Inspect all doors and shutters to make sure they seal well to prevent heat loss
  • External Shades: Remove external shades prior to a storm hitting
  • Water Systems: Inspect all water pipes and irrigation to make sure they do not freeze
  • Repair Supplies: Have patch tape for poly covering readily available

Structural Inspection

  • Glazing & Panels: Check for loose panels, damaged seals, and structural weak points
  • Gutters & Drains: Clear debris to prevent ice dams and water backup
  • Frame & Foundation: Look for any compromised areas that need reinforcement

During the Storm

  • Monitor Temperature: Check heating systems regularly to maintain optimal growing conditions
  • Watch Power Supply: Be ready to deploy generator if power fails
  • Remove Snow Buildup: Gently clear heavy snow from roof panels to prevent collapse
  • Check Airflow: Ensure blowers and ventilation systems are maintaining proper circulation
  • Monitor for Ice: Address ice accumulation on vents, doors, and critical openings
  • Protect Sensitive Plants: Move delicate specimens to warmer areas if needed

After the Storm

  • Inspect for Damage: Check glazing, frame, foundation, door seals, and poly covering
  • Clear Snow/Ice: Remove all accumulated precipitation safely
  • Test All Systems: Verify heating, venting, blowers, and irrigation are working properly
  • Check for Freeze Damage: Inspect water lines and irrigation for any freeze damage
  • Assess Plants: Look for cold damage or stress and adjust care as needed
  • Document Issues: Take photos of any damage for insurance or warranty claims
  • Restock Supplies: Replenish fuel, propane, and emergency materials used during the storm
